Like most of my work, consultation is informed by the idea that development is transactional: We develop through and within relationships. I’ll work with you to identify  areas impacting  the quality of your program’s services.

Toward that end, consultation to programs providing services to children as well as adults encompasses a broad range of attention. Most folks have received lots of brief trainings on new topics and yet the actual implementation of their work doesn’t change. Consultation helps to see what’s getting in the way: programmatically, personally, or interpersonally. The way that staff interacts with a family; the ways in which they interact with each other; the structure of your program; staff’s understanding of their roles; and their experiences of themselves, their histories, culture and class, and their clients all affect the quality of service.

The combination of focus depends on your wishes, the difficulties the program is facing, and staff’s willingness.

        Areas of Focus might include:

  1. the program’s clients: children & adults

  2. program practices

  3. staff relationships

  4. supervision and administration

  5. overall systems

  6. client services

Group Facilitation

As part of thorough consultation, I often participate and facilitate staff meetings or groups that address many of the issues above. These groups are often instructive, but have a process component in which staff address feelings about their clients (child and adult), ideas about reaching them, and implementing knowledge from trainings in the work. This format allows for an exploration of the barriers to quality service that might include: interpersonal staff issues, feelings about their work and agency, and internal struggles. These are not group therapy sessions and the focus is always toward improving client services and relationships. Some organizations have hired me to facilitate these groups with one or two teams within a larger agency. Although this will include conversations with the manager or supervisor, it is more circumscribed than consultation.
