With adolescents, I use a combination of play and talk depending on your child’s age and maturity. A game of cards or checkers, an art project, or an office basketball game can help a teen feel comfortable enough to say what’s on his or her mind. Sometimes the game itself is a metaphor for life’s circumstances.
I will work toward creating a supportive environment where your teen will feel comfortable revealing, exploring, and reflecting on their lives. Adolescence can be rough -- establishing an identity while navigating school, peers, and relationships including with their parent(s).
Adolescent Therapy
Parents often need support dealing with teens who crave independence, but still need guidance, boundaries, and protection. We’ll work together regularly to understand and develop healthy limits with your teen and improve your relationship.
With adolescents, it’s important to appreciate a level of privacy not afforded to younger children. As they struggle to form an identity, adolescents need to know that their therapist is not going to reveal every detail to a parent. At the same time, I always have the adolescent’s safety as a guiding force. Parents and I will determine together how and when we’ll share info and the adolescent will be an active contributor in this conversation.
